Fever beat Sky 91-83

For the second time this season, three of the top seven picks in April’s WNBA Draft — Caitlin Clark, Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese — share the court.

On June 1, Clark and the Fever prevailed 71-70 in a game eventually dominated by the discussion over a hard foul by Chennedy Carter.

The teams meet in Indianapolis again — both looking to improve their record after difficult starts to the season. Chicago (4-8) is eighth in the league, while Indiana (4-10) is 10th.

Fever beat Sky, 91-83

The Fever have won both games against the Sky so far this season. Again on their home court, they pulled away 23 points, 9 assists and 8 rebounds from Caitlin Clark. Aliyah Boston scored 19 points with 5 blocks.

Clark’s best game?

Is Caitlin Clark having her best game as a pro?

Carter center of Fever fan ire

The Indiana Fever crowd hasn’t forgotten Chennedy Carter’s flagrant foul on Caitlin Clark in the teams’ last matchup. After Carter split a pair of free throws, the crowd went from booing to cheering as Carter missed her second attempt. Indiana just called a timeout with 3:26 left in the game. The Fever lead 81-77 as it tries to win back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Reese takes exception to fifth foul

Chicago’s Angel Reese was called for her fifth foul and took exception. She threw ball away from the officials instead of giving it to them or a Fever player as the teams changed possessions. Reese was called for a delay of game and subbed out with 8:08 left in the game.

Two weeks after Indiana prevailed in a one-point game, the Fever and Sky face off in a matchup featuring top WNBA rookies.

Katie Lou Samuelson ends half on a 3

Samuelson has made three 3-pointers in the first half for the Fever.

Clark bouncing back against Sky

After scoring just 7 points and committing 7 turnovers against the Dream on Thursday. Indiana’s Caitlin Clark has bounced back. The rookie ended the half with a dribble drive and kick-out assist to Katie Lou Samuelson for a wide open, last-second 3. Clark is having a great all-around game so far with 9 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block and just 1 turnover. The Fever lead 47-43 at halftime.

Indiana showing improvement in 3s and low turnovers

Indiana shot 50 percent on 3-point attempts in the first half. The Fever’s season-high from 3-point range is 45.7 percent, and they’ve made more than 40 percent of their 3s just once this season.

One other number to watch is turnovers. Indiana had only four in the first, though Chicago had just three giveaways.

Only two second-quarter shots from Clark

Clark has gotten off only two shots in the second quarter — a 3-pointer (which she missed) and a reverse layup (which she made). The Fever obviously want to find her more looks than that, but it’s a good sign for Indiana that it’s continuing to build offensive options outside of Clark. In the second quarter, Aliyah Boston has gone 3 of 5 from the floor, while Kelsey Mitchell has knocked down four shots for 9 points in the second quarter.

Clark’s sneaker game

Caitlin Clark loves the Kobe 6s, and she often wore different colors in some of her biggest college games. When she scored 49 points while setting the NCAA all-time scoring record against Michigan, Clark wore reverse black-and-gold Kobe 6s. She also wore red versions while at Iowa. But the Grinches are her favorite (which she wore when Iowa set the women’s basketball attendance mark at Kinnick Stadium), and she bust them out today.

Dawn Staley weighs in

Not surprisingly, South Carolina coach Dawn Staley is following the matchup between two of her former players, Kamilla Cardoso and Aliyah Boston. There’s a lot worse places she could be following from than Milan, Italy.

Three quick fouls on NaLyssa Smith

NaLyssa Smith just picked up three fouls in 25 seconds of game action. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that before.

Aliyah Boston’s quiet start

Aliyah Boston scored two of Indiana’s first three baskets, but she hasn’t had a basket since, missing her lone field goal attempt. Boston was a fulcrum of Indiana’s offense on Thursday night against Atlanta, but they haven’t played through her as much after the first few possessions. Boston scored 27 points against the Dream, but she is still yet to score 20-plus points in consecutive games in her WNBA career.

Kamilla Cardoso looks dominant on the boards

Kamilla Cardoso has 8 rebounds in 11 minutes of play. I assumed the 6-foot-7 center would eventually become one of the most dominant rebounders in the WNBA but I thought it might take her a while to acclimate to the physicality and timing of the pro game. And it’s not just that she’s doing this well against the Fever, which isn’t the most dominant interior team in the W. Cardoso had nine boards against Connecticut last week. She’s a huge reason why the Sky have an 11-2 advantage in second-chance points.

She had three on the first possession of the game.

Foul on Samuelson stands … inexpllicably

Katie Lou Samuelson is still upset about that foul call against her, asking the ref what she was supposed to do with an offensive player pushing into her. The Fever challenged it, and somehow it was not overturned. Seemed very obviously not a foul on Samuelson on replay. But not to the officials.

Marina Mabrey leads the way for Sky

It’s not at all surprising to see Marina Mabrey aggressive early in this contest. With just over eight minutes to go in the second quarter, Mabrey leads all scorers with 8 points and has taken a game-high seven shots. Her starting role comes after she attempted only four shots in Chicago’s two-point loss on Friday to Washington. The last time Mabrey attempted four shots or fewer in a game was July 2022. She’s taken fewer than four shots in a game only once since 2020.

Kelsey Mitchell knocks down jumper

Indiana’s Kelsey Mitchell, playing with a heavy heart, knocks down the jumper. This is her first Father’s Day without her dad and former coach, Mark, who died in March. She said yesterday her father prepared her for anything life throws at her.

What’s in a shoe?

Angel Reese was asked pregame about her “Joker” shoes tonight, and she feigned innocence, saying she didn’t know what art would be on them until they got delivered to her. But c’mon. We know this matchup and this rivalry has a little something extra to it.

Sky taking advantage of extra possessions

The Sky are shooting 44.4 percent from the field but lead by three because they are winning the possession battle. Eight offensive rebounds and only one turnover has led to 11 more field-goal attempts for Chicago.

Successful first quarter for Fever

The Fever have to be pretty happy with their performance in the first quarter. On the season, Indiana is the worst first quarter team in the league, entering Sunday’s contest with a league-worst minus-13.9 net rating. They trail 26-23 heading into the second quarter.

Chippy play starting in rivalry

Our first bit of chippy play. Chicago’s Dana Evans was called for a foul on Indiana’s Caitlin Clark, but it looks like Clark locked Evans’ arm after the initial contact and didn’t let go. Evans took exception and pushed Clark after the play. They shared a few words before they were separated. On the replay, it honestly looks like Clark could’ve been called for an offensive foul.

Caitlin Clark starts with a bang

Caitlin Clark with a 3, defensive stop and layup on three consecutive plays. The Fever rookie is off to a strong start after being held to just 7 points in Thursday’s win over the Dream.

Indiana off to strong start

Great start for the Fever today — we’re seeing the impact of an effective Aliyah Boston inside and an efficient Caitlin Clark outside. Indiana is quicker to the basket and taking advantage of it.

Sky change starting lineup

After three consecutive losses, Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon changed her starting lineup for Sunday’s game against Indiana, as Chennedy Carter and Lindsay Allen replace Dana Evans and Diamond DeShields.

The new five-player group of Carter, Allen, Marina Mabrey, Reese and Kamilla Cardoso has played 27 minutes together this season and has outscored opponents by 14 points during that time.
