Miley Cyrus isn’t one to shy away from controversy, and her shoe choice at last night’s Grammy Awards proved just that.

The Hannah Montana star, 31, stepped out onto the red carpet at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles last night donning a striking custom gold Maison Margiela look, and would it be Margiela without a pair of Tabi shoes?

Miley donned a gold velvet pair of the divisive split-toe heels, as she posed for cameras before triumphing in the Best Pop Solo Performance category and Record of the Year for her song Flowers.

Despite critics saying they look like hooves, the style is popular among celebs such as Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, and Dua Lipa.

Hailing from Japan in the 15th century, Tabi or Jika-tabi is a style of footwear that divides the toe to promote balance and extra stability.

Today, they have become a status symbol in the world of fashion, meaning they cost a small fortune.

At Masion Margiela, they come in a range of styles, from ballerina pumps priced at £620, to classic Mary-Janes costing £920.

And that’s if you can get your hands on them in the first place. Plenty of styles are currently out of stock on the Margiela website, forcing fashionistas to secondary sellers that charge even higher prices.

Dua Lipa has styled Tabis for casual outings and has been snapped out in a pair of heeled Mary Janes with white socks.

More recently, the shoes received approval from the Kardashian/ Jenner dynasty, and Kim, Kris, and Kylie, each donning a pair to the Maison Margiela spring/summer 2024 show at Paris fashion week.

The shoes are so highly desirable that they recently caused scandal in the fashion community after a woman reported a traumatic Tinder encounter that saw her date allegedly swipe her designer shoes and hand them off to his girlfriend.

Lexus, known as @nextlevellexuss on TikTok, is a New York City-based creative who sells knitwear through her brand Maddi and Dannii. And the designer recently went viral after exposing her match from hell.

In a TikTok posted September 2, Lexus explained how her date stole her coveted Tabi shoes which had been a birthday gift, and racked up over 850,000 views in a matter of days.

Lexus welcomed the man to her apartment after a date. The following morning after he left the influencer noticed her pair of Tabis had disappeared.

She headed to Tinder to message him and saw he’d unmatched her, preventing her from contacting him. Lexus combed through her call log and found he’d deleted all traces of his number.

She eventually made contact with Joshua who denied that he’d stolen the shoes and offered hundreds of dollars to appease her.

‘When you’re offering money, that means you did it. An innocent person would not give $1000,’ she said.

She was shocked to learn that Joshua had a girlfriend and had gifted the shoes to her.
